Great news from a great Gospel group! The Gaither Vocal Band (GVB) has reinvented the direction of its singing career.

Gaither.com has announced the departure of long-time lead singer Guy Penrod.

He has been well-loved for his powerful vocals and extensive range as lead singer. One of the songs that he used to sing powerfully is “Because He Lives” during Gaither Homecomings, a song that usually starts with Bill Gaither (bass), followed by a baritone (Ben Speer, most of the time), and then Guy himself. Guy has been part of the group for 14 years. (BTW, you can scour Youtube for “Canadian Homecoming – Because He Lives” and “Israel Homecoming” as well for dramatic renditions!)

Guy Penrod will be replaced by Michael English, a former lead singer of the GVB in the 90’s.

Also, GVB’s baritone Marshall Hall since 2004 will also be leaving the group, to be replaced by Mark Lowry, also a former baritone of the group.

As part of the big former members’ comeback, David Phelps also is returning as the group’s tenor, to share the role with Wes Hampton. The two guys are really great tenors. But probably, David Phelps will be singing higher, which he is known to be able to do so.

What was notable of this transtion was the group having five members. Since its birth sometime in the late 70’s, it has always had four members: bass, baritone, lead tenor. Bill Gaither named the Gaither Vocal Band as so because he once said he didn’t want the group to be restricted to four people only.

Now that there are two tenors, I wonder how will they arrange their songs. But to the matchless wisdom of God and His blessing of musical artistry to His people, what could be difficult?

With a treasure chest of fresh comeback talents, this group teeming with well-loved Gospel music giftedness is surely going to capture the world once more of its unique voice. I look forward to their next album.

Funny, Bill Gaither used to lightly describe his group as “just four men having fun around a microphone.”

  1. I AM SO THANKFUL DAVID PHELPS AN MICHAEL ENGLISH ARE PART OF THE WONDERFUL GAITHER GROUP AGAIN.I FIRST REMEMBER SEEING MICHAEL ENGLISH ON A VIDEO GOSPEL CALLED WEVE COME TO WORSHIP MADE IN ATLANTA SINGING I BOWED ON MY KNEES, AND WHAT A WONDERFUL CHANGE THE LORD MADE IN MY LIFE AT THAT MOMENT. I DONT KNOW IF YOU ALL REALIZE THE TRUE BLESSINGS YOU BRING TO PEOPLE LIKE ME WITH SUCH SONGS OF PRAISE BECAUSE IT GETS LONELY SOMESTIMES WHEN YOU ARE A CHRISTIAN AND TRUELY LOVE THE LORD. MY DAD ALWAYS TOLD ME ”WHERE THERES A WILL THERES A WAY, ALTHOUGH I THINK HE MEANT WHERE THERE IS GODS WILL THERE IS A WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOD BLESS YOU ALL AND I CANT WAIT TO SEE YOU ALL TOGETHER AGAIN KATHY WIEGEL…………………………………………………………….

    1. Yes! They’re all great. But Guy Penrod’s exit as lead singer is also bittersweet. I’ve heard and seen him on videos more often than Michael English that’s why I am more attached to him. I’ve studied his voice and knew its style. I loved his singing so I’ll miss him!

  2. I will really miss Guy in the vocal band his voice and his talent is one that will not be easily replaced. Guy smiles with his eyes when he sings and his face shows Christ in it. I have also enjoyed so much hearing about his family and I pray that he will still stay in touch with the group and that we will see him do well in his solo career.

  3. You comment that Guy will be replaced by Michael English. While I don’t deny that Michael has some talent and has had some memorable moments, there is NO replacing Guy Penrod – no one like him, no one with the same sincerety or talent. There may be someone singing lead instead of him but there is no replacement for him and the GVB will forever have a gap in his absence.

  4. Micheal English is the best thing that could have happenend to GVB. I love Guy Penrod but adore Michael. Michael just brings something more extra special. Real suffering brings about wisdom, compassion and growth and it is abundantly clear in Michael. I do understand that people have different tastes but to deny or try to diminish Michael’s tremendous talent and sincerety is both sad and funny.

  5. I don’t really care to much for the new GVB.I enjoyed
the old GVB and i miss Guy Penrod & Marshell Hall
IT were a blessing to hear tham sing.but i pray that the new GVB does well.
